SJ Police Shut Down Medical Marijuana Benefit

A special task force has been raiding dispensaries in San Jose over the last couple months. The most recent being simultaneous raids at the Medileaf locations that occurred earlier this week. Almost no charges have surfaced from these raids and it appears it's all a scare tactic to disrupt these businesses and discourage more from opening. The task force is headed by the police department. The City Council has been shockingly quite on the raids.

The San Jose dispensaries were planning to have a benefit this week at a hotel ballroom to raise money for a legal fund. Attorneys and the ASA were to speak on the current state of the raids, a profile of the people behind the task force doing the raids, dispensary rights when being raided, and so on.

Apparently, earlier this week the San Jose police department contacted the Holiday Inn that was rented for the event, and told the hotel that the benefit was "illegal" which in turn forced the hotel to cancel the rental contract.

I'm posting this because I think it's disgusting that the police are going after the dispensaries in this area. These are small business owners that are doing their best to serve patients while complying with state and city guidelines that can be vague or totally non existent. To go after these businesses with guns drawn and treat them like criminals is totally wrong. The City Council needs to get involved and protect its citizens from the actions of their police force. This will all eventually end up in court and the law will fall on the patients side as it has time and time again in the past, but that doesn't undo all the damage it does to these businesses and the patients they serve. Shame on you San Jose.

My understanding is that Medileaf is instructive to other medical cannabis industry participants in regards to legal compliance and communication with local law enforcement and officials. As the truth bears out in the Medileaf case, we may see an overextended group lose its political support from citizens at large. If San Jose is under attack, we are all under attack. Stand up.

I wonder why only a few dispensaries were raided? The local news in San Francisco covered the story and gave plenty of air time to the participants at the benefit which eventually found its home. Freedom to assemble seems pretty restrictive...permits, licenses....of course people need to be safe when they meet, but if we can't meet then we can be more easily controlled....would the cops overextend their efforts to keep us safe and in turn stifle a meeting?
