Station

The One-Stop Top Shelf Shop

Try saying that five times fast...

The Station has some of Boulder's most glorious bud. Lots of their strains produce enormous fist-sized buds - the insides open up like tightly-packed geodes filled to the brim with crystals. What's better, their trimmers work liberally leaving nothing clean, beautiful flowers and intimidating shake/trim. Their strain selection numbers into the twenties, and are as varied as legendary strains such as G-13 and Cinderella 99 to their own house strains. They also offer organic options for over a half dozen or so at a time. They offer a handful of concentrates and edibles, but that doesn't really seem to be their specialty.

The largest downsides to the Station are their prices, but even this can be beat by keeping your eyes peeled for coupons and other specials. Even with their standard prices, the quality makes it well worth it.

Great strain with a delicious flavor, smell, look, and feel! The buds from this strain weren't as big as some of the others in the store, but no smaller than most dispensaries'. The high is a pure indica sensation - best reserved for down-time and heavy muscle and joint relaxation.

Very well-rounded indica that isn't too heavy for daytime use. The buds are huge and absolutely fascinating to stare at and trimmed right to the core of the buds, leaving only the best part of the bud. A must-try!

The budtender told me that their SLH would keep its flavor through an entire joint, and he was right, even for vaporizers and bowls. Possibly the best SLH I've ever seen, too. Despite the abnormally fluffy buds, the Station got it perfect on smell and taste, and the high is fantastic as well.

Bud Cellar

Great intro to the Denver MMJ scene

Taking a risk and trying out Bud Cellar on south Santa Fe was the high point of my day today (I would be ashamed if that pun were intended). I thought I'd made a bit of a mistake when I was filling out paperwork in the dimly lit lobby, but once I was let in the space opened up into a cozy, sleek urban space, with the layout of a VIP lounge - their mid-shelf bud, edibles, and concentrates were all in the main room, which split off with a room on either side, one for their bargain bud and the other for their top-shelf strains.

They have a large line-up of strains, many of which the offspring of a number of great strains. The buds are healthy, pungent, and potent at reasonable prices. Their house joints are fantastic ($5 each or 3 for $10) - a gram or more of wonderfully sweet and sour shake packed into a huge cone and epically potent. They even carry a high CBD medicinal strain, Cannatonic #2. The budtender was well versed in not only their selection of strains, but other popular strains around the state, too.

Bud Cellar is a great place to drop by - good bud at a reasonable price. On the downside, they have a rather small selection of edibles and other products, and despite being good their strains lack character.

These joints are the best I've ever seen. They weighed out at a whopping 1.5 grams and Bud Cellar does a 3 for $10 special. Hard to beat. On top of that, they are dangerously potent, starting with a combination of sweet fruity flavors and sour/fuel and finishes as a wonderful sour with, and I rarely say this, a perfect fuel taste.. These things are good through and through!

Everyone seems to be a fan of DJ Short's Flo, and a good friend of mine convinced me, too, a month or so ago. This take on the original Flo that I assume has a little Lemon Skunk in the mix is a cautious, yet thoughtful breed. The Lemon Skunk is present in the taste and smell, but only slightly.

High - Muscle relaxing, and heavy fatigue induction. (4.0)

The discrepancy with the buds in my gram are what hit this strain the hardest - two buds were big and healthy, the perfect glamor buds, while the other two should have without a doubt been picked out when they prepackaged it. The Farm's Purps are a wonderful glamor strain that catches everyone's eyes. Unfortunately it doesn't have much else going on for it, outside of its heavy indica-like qualities.

Sweet Mary Jane Bhudda Budda

Dispensary:
Boulder Kind Care

Only the best for my brownies!

I went into BKC today looking for something new and interesting. Instead of earwax, I went with a new cannabutter product from Sweet Mary Jane. When I saw that the little 4oz. ramekin contained a whopping 1500mg of THC I almost peed myself, and as if that weren't bad enough as it were I was told it was only $25. On top of all that, you get to keep the stylish green or blue ramekin from World Market (four of each color and I have a birthday gift for my sister). MMJ products don't come at a better price than this!

The extraction technique used appears to be a water and fat freezing method to separate the butter from the gunk - the most common/basic method I've seen. The downside that comes along with that, however, is a less-than-appealing brown water at the bottom, tiny particles in the butter, and a strong marijuana taste. Sweet Mary Jane has done a very good job limiting the pungency of the marijuana flavor, so much so that a batch of brownies I made had almost no trace of marijuana in taste, but managed to knock out myself and two patient friends in less than two hours.

With that said, keep one of these in your fridge at all times - you won't regret it! Finally, use caution with amounts, as it is EXTREMELY potent! Certainly not for the faint of spirit.

Boulder Vital Herbs

A "neighborhood friendly" feeling is all and good, but...

Just as the one employee on staff there said, it certainly feels like a quaint little North Boulder shop that fits in perfectly with Moe's and the Wine Merchant. While waiting for my paperwork to be processed I glanced through their selection of magazines, all of which were trying to sell me something on every page. My favorite. The employee said that they had recently changed owners, so perhaps that was why their buds were very malnourished and more-or-less a complete waste of money. Or maybe I just chose the wrong strains. They did, as others have said, have a good selection of edibles, but I didn't really pay much attention to that because the employee didn't seem too enthused about it. Their bubble hash was an absolute was of money too... well, maybe not completely, but damn near so.

There's not really much more to write about Boulder Vital Herbs, other than that I was going to give them a two star rating when I first came into this review, but in hindsight I really can't recommend anything about them. I live a few blocks away and was looking forward to making them a regular stop, so I certainly don't take any joy in rating them so low.

Top Shelf Alternatives

Selling Out 101

Don't misread the title to reflect Top Shelf Alternatives, rather, I feel like a sell-out going back there. Here's why:

Top Shelf has the BEST deals available for Cheeba Chews (4 for $15, or $3.75 each, for quads all April). Their line-up of strains is extremely impressive, and some deserve serious recognition. Lavender, their top top top shelf strain at $15/g, is truly a modern marvel - for a pretty penny you get a small little bag with hardly anything in it. Disappointing, certainly, but the sheer density of the buds is astonishing and although it is not the most potent strain around it is certainly one of the most unforgettable experiences (I highly recommend a vaporizer for it).

This is all well and good, but the feel inside the building was incredibly uncomfortable, which was not helped by the owner/property manager chewing out my bud tender while she was assisting me. The swanky, upscale Pearl feeling of their lounge reminded me of everything I don't really like about Boulder, however, in all due fairness it is in the right location to be "that" dispensary. After my purchase and some light small talk I instinctively bolted out the doors - they either pushed me out the door or my body was trying to tell me something. The point is that it was a very socially uncomfortable experience for me.

In spite of the negatives I will always feel like a sell-out to the frustrating antics of Top Shelf and their designer furniture while swimming in bargain edibles and some great grams here and there.

MMJ America - Boulder

You get what you pay for

This is a difficult review to do - on the one hand I think that their $150 ounce is a bargain with at least a couple of their strains, and on the other hand there is not really any appeal outside of that as far as medicine is concerned. Their bud was consistently filled with stems, and lacked any real character (some strains are very forgettable). They have free parking behind the building, and the inside is very straight-forward - a relief from many of the swanky dispensaries around Pearl and what's more the staff were friendly and down-to-earth. Like the other "down-to-earth" dispensaries on Pearl, though, the experience is very sketchy for Boulder and the ATM in the alley provides no relief.

Again, the only real bargain in their marijuana is the deal on ounces, and so long as you don't stray outside of the tenders' top recommendations, you should be fine. Unless there is something that you find magnetic about MMJ America, I think it's fair to pass over this one.

The Greenest Green

Good Bud and Strange Vibes

I first came to GG during one of their arts and crafts fairs, which provides a strange first impression particularly when you know a vendor. That aside, and despite the friendliness of the staff, I'm having a difficult time recommending them - it feels a lot like filling a Walgreens subscription when making a purchase. Their medicine, however, is very high quality; they did well in this year's Colorado Cannabis Cup. If you like the franchise feeling then you will be rewarded with some knockout strains, and that's why I'll keep coming back... That and their 8' pool table is just begging me to shoot some 9-ball.

Bark less fearsome than its bite

Smell - Very floral with hints of herb garden-influenced notes.
Buds - Beautiful and tiny popcorn flowers densely packed together with great crystal coverage.
Taste - Pungent chemical and petrol flavor.
High - Focused energy boost with aloof creativity.

Chemdawg seems to be pretty standard around most dispensaries, and can be a great go-to sativa if grown properly and with good genes. The Dandelion's strain smells alright: strong floral notes with garden herbs. The taste is a strangling chemical and petrol flavor that made it difficult to enjoy smoking. Both of these aspects are trouble, as they don't really fit the description of good Chemdawg. The buds, however, had wonderful and dense flower formations with a generous coating of crystals. The high comes on strong with an aloof creative energy that leaves the patient absent-minded for a bit, though that quickly wears off and the energy is more clear and creative. The euphoria settles in very well, too.

The Dandelion does a good take on this relative of the Diesel strains, and it is well-rounded for a mid-shelf strain. There are some serious issues with smell and taste - thankfully everything else falls in place for an overall enjoyable experience.

Leza would agree; Durban Poison is the bud of the Gods

Smell - Very sour and sweet, much like Sweetarts candy. Absolutely incredible.
Buds - Extremely dense and large with wonderful crystal formations.
Taste - Artificial grape, sour candy, and petrol.
High - Euphoric and restless energy with inattentiveness; very potent and relaxing.

The first thing that amazes person after person about this BKC's Durban Poison is its fantastic smell, which happens to be the same sweet and sour ultra-sugary candy that rotted my teeth as a child. It's also about as pungent as coffee. Nearly all of the nuggets are enormous, weighing in at well over a gram each. The flowers are dull on the outside and, like geodes, a cavern of marvelous crystals on the inside. Smokes wonderfully, and tastes much like its smell - starts with a sweet artificial grape candy flavor that develops into a wonderful citrus sour which eventually fades to petrol. The high is very creative and distracting - it comes off as an indica at first, and often times fools people, however it quickly shines as an intoxicating sativa. It is very relaxing and muscle-relaxing, almost causing users to be couch-bound, and still provides an energizing and euphoric boost.

This is one of the best strains I have ever had, and is world-class quality - it's not hard fantasizing about BKC's own version of "In the Land Where the Blues Began"-styled story of finding these seeds. Whatever their secret is, this is the kind of bud that makes Humboldt County look like a ditch in Mexico. Given its ultra-cheap price there is really no reason not to be smoking this right now.

Almost as exciting as herpatology

I apologize in advance to any reptile lovers. It was nothing personal.

Smell - Citrus with an earthy skunk base.
Bud - Crunchy and fluffy buds with some signs of malnourishment; decent crystal formation.
Taste - Sour flavor with strong earthy and soil flavors, traces of petrol and chemical flavors.
High - Consisted almost entirely of mildly enjoyable confusion and euphoria.

This was very poor quality Super Lemon Haze and by no means anything to write home about - I am literally embarrassed a bit about how this strain reflects on the Boulder MMJ scene. I knew this strain was trouble when I photographed it - the buds were very crunchy and hardly set themselves apart from my malnourished first attempt at growing. The smell was very bland and it took several attempts to actually get a whiff of the buds and not the plastic bag it was packaged in. The taste was good for a sour, however, the good strains of SLH that I have had are unmistakably sweet, so in this case it's probably not a good sign. The high was the best part, but still came up far short of both the effects promised by the budtender and past experiences.

It was a shame that this bud was so poor of quality, and I do hope to give it another chance in the future when they've worked out the kinks. For now, however, I would stay away.

Dispensary Review:

The Farm

Most addictive drama since House

This is admittedly a difficult review to write; I've read a number of the reviews already on this website and have gained my own ideas through interactions with some of their patients. Needless to say there is a lot of drama in the air surrounding The Farm.

With their award-winning Blue Dream and a number of other high-quality strains, edibles, and products at very competitive prices it is hard to deny that The Farm is one of the appealing dispensaries around. They offer great membership benefits given their large "all-in-one" wellness center approach, including the unique services of haircuts and the rumored "cookie parties". They have a great selection of edibles offered at fair prices and a large selection of novelty items and smoking apparatuses. Their house dark chocolates are strong, but make no attempt to hide their cannabis flavor.

The first moment encountering the dispensary by car had me perplexed at their miniature parking lot - I paid $0.50 to park on the street to avoid any hassles. After I was buzzed in, a cheery young woman greeted me with a rave about Girl Scout cookies, and it was truthfully a bit intimidating. I was given a fairly convincing membership pitch while signing paperwork, and then given a quick personal tour of all the services they offer. I was thrilled to find an in-depth strain menu - a simple amenity that other dispensaries could benefit from. While waiting for the afternoon traffic to filter through I was given a sales pitch for The Farm from a proud regular, which was more of the same "The Farm is the best" type of rhetoric that I'd heard during my tour. The budtender was a nice, well-versed fellow that took an elementary approach to describing their menu at first, and was thankfully quick to respond when I expressed some knowledge on the topic.

All-in-all, and with controversies aside, The Farm has some of the area's best strains and at very competitive prices, along with a huge selection of edibles and marijuana-related products. Their wellness center approach to medicine seems to offer the most important of resources to the patients with the most need for expanded dispensary services. There is, however, an unmistakably thick presence of drama in the air at all times - every person I interacted with seemed to make an effort to address sentiments I'd heard about the dispensary (such as their prepackage policy, which honestly isn't an issue given their return policy). All my interactions and the interactions I observed felt very exclusive, the type of exclusive you see in high school cliques. If you want the care of a wellness center with great bud and/or enjoy the clique scene of Boulder businesses (Trident, Laughing Goat, and Folsom Street in the coffee business, e.g.) then you will love The Farm, and you will be rewarded with discounted, cheap premium Colorado ganja in return. If you're like me, however, and prefer a down-to-earth approach over a "club" environment then it may be best to save The Farm for the occasional good bud. Finally, if you have a habit of getting wrapped up in drama or have zero tolerance for it then I suggest staying away from The Farm, or have a caretaker pick up your meds for you.

The "slow clap" of MMJ

Smell - Deep basil aroma with floral and sweet/sour berry notes.
Buds - Flowers look like beautiful amazonian vines clenching dense growth; dense, almost fluffy, with plenty of moisture.
Taste - Cream and an unspecific baked flavor with hints of wood and mild fruit.
High - Very energetic and creative, with psychedelic and euphoric qualities.

This strain was a surprising winner; I had my doubts going into it when I filled the bowl of my bubbler. The smell seemed uninteresting at first, but developed quite wonderfully after giving it a few more chances. The flavor was probably its weakest spot, but the baked taste combined with the cream flavors ended up similar to crème brûlée. The high was magnificently energizing and inspiring, though I have been bouncing off the walls in a forgetful daze (normally not a problem, but this review has thus far been a struggle to write). Shaman's best feature is its wild beauty with purple here and there as if it were wound like rope - it was a pleasure to photograph. I was going to rate Shaman as a four, but after finishing this review I think Shaman will squeak by with a five.

Nothing shy of a "gross" display of power

Ok, horrible pun. Moving on...

I normally don't review edibles, but this one broke my principle because it is The Farm's own product. These chocolates are very potent and made with some high quality hash. The effects started after only 35-40 minutes and persisted well past the three hours, and had intense sedative effects. The downside to this product was its taste and overall quality as an edible product. A large area I find important in quality is how well the food either masks or marries the marijuana taste, and these chocolates fell flat on their face. The dark chocolate is a bit above grocery store quality and come in around 70% cacao by my estimate. Unfortunately this flavor is overpowered by a terrifying spicy marijuana punch, which makes it impossible to savor the chocolates.

I loved the quality of the hash and the dark chocolate was surprisingly good and wasn't the horrible bitter that drives most non-veteran chocolatiers away (cacao, however, is a wonderful natural remedy for sore throats - particularly useful for all you smokers our there). It was incredibly unfortunate that the marijuana flavors were so unbearably over-pronounced, though I was nonetheless pleasantly surprised with the product's potency.

One-punch knockout

Smells strongly of earthy pine and soap with a hints of lemony citrus and ginger.
Buds look like clusters of green flames and are still fairly dense given how fluffy they are.
Taste was similar to the smell, with a distinct soap taste that felt a bit like juvenile punishment - not all bad, the taste was a bit spicy and "palette-cleansing" as well.
The high was very potent and characteristic of indicas, leaving the body feeling draped in wet towels.

Fresh Republic does justice to the legacy of the Cannatonic strain with this powerful indica, truly giving the body a sensation of being pulled on by heavy gravity which is consequently great for muscle relaxation. The soapy taste and smell detracts very little from the overall quality of this strain, and is no reason to avoid its overwhelming euphoria.

Pleasant smell; strong cantaloupe and pine aromas.

Ingested by smoking via a sherlock - flavors were minimal and overpowered by a light peppery burning on the back of my throat, and the flavors that were present were spicy and woody.
The high had a heavy indica-esque onset that quickly wore down into a mild sativa feeling. It offered a high level of alertness with limited real attention to anything.

I was very disappointed that this bud did not live up to the flavors in its name, however, the high was as described and actually pleasantly surprising at times. The smell was good and the quality of the buds were good, however, it seemed to be overall more bark than bite and doesn't really live up to the strain's history.

Boulder Kind Care

Fall from grace

I'm still not certain the story behind Boulder Kind Care's fall around May '12. This is what I do know:

-BKC does not currently have their own grow warehouse and is buying wholesale.
-Much of the senior staff were fired or left, including the growers, trimmers, bud tenders, and manager.
-Their former warehouse was reportedly raided by government officials, however, I won't speculate why and have heard a handful of possible reasons.

They used to be one of my favorite dispensaries (and their review was five stars), however, I've had no recent interest in continuing shopping there. The wholesale bud is mediocre, and I am fairly certain that they sometimes rename the strains. Their pricing and membership benefits are no longer competitive with other dispensaries, as well.

As a formerly dedicated patron, I had an especially hard to adjusting to an all new set of employees, losing all my rapport - I can't imagine that I am the only one who feels this way, either.

Wonderful experience, taste didn't match up

Wonderful smell; sweet and sour kiwis with hints of strawberries and ginger.
Buds are tightly wound in pistils, with purple leaves dotting the flowers like sugar-coated raisins.
Smoked from first a bubbler and then a bat a second time to confirm discrepancies: taste was distinctly sour, with strong soil and chemical flavors (confirmed by another as well via a 3rd smoking medium).
The high is very relaxing, particularly on muscles and joints though also mentally as well - I've often been distracted while writing this review.

Boulder Kind Care does a very potent Grape Ape, and the t-shirts in their lobby look almost as wonderful as the bud itself. The high was very enjoyable, however the flavor did not match up to the strain's notorious sweet flavors that I've seen from other growers.
