What does OG stand for? I've heard "Ocean Grown" as well as "Original Gangster" ... anyone know the name and origins?

And what about genetics of the flower makes it an OG?

I know OGs are huge in southern California, but I haven't been able to get a straight answer to any of these questions.

I've heard its origins come from Super Silver Haze crossed with Afghani.

I grew up in So-Cal, and I honestly think that the term "OG" is 100% bullshit down there. I've seen clubs that have "65 strains of OGs", and budtenders in LA ask me, "do you like OGs?" as if the question means something.

OG is supposed to stand for Original Gangster (in So-Cal, anyway). It's Original Gangster Kush, meaning it's supposed to be one of the earliest varieties of kush. This obviously cannot be true, but that's what it's supposed to mean. Nowadays, it's really more of a term used in So-Cal to describe the flavor or a strain-- not so much the high.

In the Bay Area, I believe it is treated more like a standalone strain (though different varieties are different highs), though I am unsure of it's genetics.

I hope that helps.

There are a couple stories floating around the web, this seems to be a popular one... and then there is what swerve says about it, id say if anyone knows OG, its him... and he doesnt even know the true story. none the less its some DANK.

"In late '93 John from Grass Valley Ca. got the Chem Dog cut. He shared it with me, Jerry(cowboy) from Dibble Creek Ca. and Harold(Putz) from Sunset Beach Ca. Putz had a male he called the secret ingredient. It was a cross of Lemon Thai and an Old World Paki Kush. Putz bred the secret ingredient to the Chem Dog. The buds that came out of this cross were going around So. L.A. county in '95. Someone told Putz that Kush must be so good because it was mountain grown. Putz laughed and told him "this Kush is Ocean Grown Kush bro". The tag stuck and it became known as OG Kush. In the spring of '96 Putz married a girl from New Zealand. Before moving there he sent cuts of his OG to me and Bob(beans) in Salinas Ca. He gave all his P1 stock and all the remaining seed he had to ****(mad dog) from Downey Ca. In late '96 **** sold some seed to some guys in the Valley. That's where the San Fernando Valley cut of OG comes from. It's like the Original only more sat in pheno type. **** sold a cut of the original to a guy in Orange county and that cut is called Larry today. It's still around Orange county. **** sent one other cut of the original OG to a breeder in Europe. As far as I know he never let anyone else have it.
Jerry bred his Chem Dog cut to a Humboldt county indica boy. This was the beginning of his cubing proccess. At BX3 he got a pheno that had all the smell, taste and kick of the Chem Dog, but in a pure indica pheno. Jerry gave this plant to Bob. It became known as the West Coast Dog.
Bob bred this plant to my Old World Kush male. He took a male from that cross and bred it to the OG cut Putz had sent him. This is what made the original Bubba Kush."

Lineage:ChemDawg x [ Lemon Thai x Old World Paki Kush]

-Poison OG=Cut came from O.Gkushman, he grew it from seed found in a pound of O.G back in ‘96

-SAC#1 & #3= #1 came from G-Thumb in the San Fernando Valley, #3 came from San Fernando Valley but is very popular in Santa Barbara and sometimes goes by the name “Purple O.G Kush”, the cut was brought into the scene by the owner of the now defunct Hortipharm in Santa Barbara"

much respect to aleYarok ... that's the best and most complete explanation i've ever heard for this most debated topic.

personally, i'm not much of an OG fan, and i agree with allgovernmentsLIE that most OGs are just named that way as marketing bullshit.

go down to LA and all you see is OG, OG, and more OG.

Yea, I have heard so MANY stories on OG Kush I don't even like getting it anymore because you never know what it's going to really be. Who told the dispensary what it was? How reliable was that source to the true story? I think aleYarok did a great job mapping out how OG came about. It sounds believable, but then again how can we all be certain that guy didn't juts make an in depth story about OG Kush for no reason?.. who knows..
I've heard OG Kush = ChemDawg x Sour Diesel which would be about 85% sativa.
I've heard at numerous dispensaries tell me it is a pure or almost pure indica......

So yea, Whatever nug OG KUSH really is... it is some really dank, potent cannabis that is light green and gives the user a nice "kick." What I am saying is that I think people who dont know what strain they have gotten, and its really bomb and won't dissapoint they just name it OG Kush or some OG name for marketing purposes.

I'm not saying there isnt a true OG Kush strain out there... But which cut are you getting? and are their properties going to be completely different. Larry OG Kush give me the same feel as SFV OG Kush??? U know.. it's stuff like that that makes it ultra hard to track down exactly what we are medicating with.

So one must ultimately deduce for himself what a strain feels like to him when he/she medicates with it. Does it hit in the body or the head? Both? Does the body hit right away or creep up 10-15 minutes later? Vice-versa with sativa. One could buy a chemical tester set and test your nug to see how much THC and CBD is in them if your REALLY had to know.

I like to try and stick with strains that are easily traced in genetics or strains that I have tested and know they work for the medicine I want at that Particular time of day/night or situation. If I have work to do, I either want a easy floating sativa that won't hit too strong, thus giving me a hard hitting comedown. Or a soft indica with sativa traits to counter the CBD body high and "couch-lock" effect of indicas, while adding in body high to aid pain that one might have throughout the day.. I.e. sitting at a desk all day (lower back pain) or labor work (full body pain). You get the point. So it's nice to be able to pick out strains that ou know will give certain effects.

And I always feel with OG Kush in a club.. its like meh... whats it gunna be at this club a sativa or indica... or just some strain.

I went to a Can. Club in San Jose and they claimed Bubba Kush was Bubblegum x Master Kush. Which I have heard many people claim... However that is not what I have heard the original Bubbah Kush was... (another strain that basically runs you on a goose chase through the web trying to trace its genetics.)

Again what I'm trying to say here guys is that even Clubs are misinformed and it really can be hard to tell what a strain is. Baybe what they called bubba kush at that club really was bubblegum x master kush from their growers (thus not being the true Bubba kush)... or maybe they just have no idea about the true story.. like most of us... and just deduce what genetics bubbah kush may be from their own opinions and then label it as such... So again who knows if your getting the real BUbbah Kush or Bubblegum x Master kUsh ( of which may or may not be the true genetics of bubba kush.)

See aleYarok's post for what I think the true lineage of Bubbah Kush is.

The other thing that growers run into is that not all seeds of a certin strain from a btach will turn out exactly the same with the exact same traits. They can differ slightly in smell, shape, and taiste, and someimes even the high.

The properties of a strain may also change, be amplified, or reduced from being grown in different climates... including whether it was grown indoors or out (this will not drasticaly change the high of the cannabis, but all the factors can have an affect).

Last but not least.. Strains will vary on the grower... if they used nutrients or not.. what kinds and when... and how detailed was their grow? Difference of top shelf or bottom shelf for same strain.

K. Im done rambling. Just had to give my opinion on cannabis strain and tracking them down. And OG and BUbbah are the classic wild goose hunt.... Serially!

Happy tokings!

AleYarok, thank you for all the information. If you were me, where would you go to get the best OG Kush and Bubba seeds and cuttings? Being that you know where it came fom. So many times you hear/see people grow something labeled something at the club or wherever and comes out something else once it flowers. Just wondering if you know anyplace that carries the genetic line you speak of.
